Nintendo shoots down hopes for MMO games (again)
Don’t get your hopes up just yet for an Animal Crossing MMO from Nintendo - they say it’s just not worth their time. Don’t expect any kind of avatar-based worlds like those in PlayStation Home, either. Your Miis are staying in the Plaza.
In an interview, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata had the following to say:
“The first question I would ask is whether the service is fun if you’re 5 or 95, if you’re tech-savvy and if you’re computer illiterate. If that’s not a hurdle we can get past, it’s not something Nintendo is going to pursue.
“…In that respect, the virtual-world services out there now still aren’t at a place where we’d like to join in–and certainly not to the point that we’d want to jump into competition with everybody else. We’d rather focus on doing things that nobody else would do… even if we were to make a virtual-world-like product, we’d be sure to make it something that nobody would call it a product similar to another company’s offering.”
Guess that means no Pokemon MMO anytime soon, either. That’s OK. I’d rather have 3D projection.

Nintendo will fool us all by unveiling some revolutionary MMO concept for Animal Crossing.
If not, then…bah, bah, bah, bah, and BAH!
Animal Crossing won’t be a traditional MMO, but it will carry some similarities. I’m of the opinion that Nintendo should stay away from MMO’s anyway. I’m confident they can come up with something that won’t take over our lives, and at the same time be enjoyable.
COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC:
..Wherei s that picture from? o_o;
It doesn’t look like anywhere in TP I know.
I’d be very surprised if Animal Crossing Wii didn’t have some sort of online gameplay. The Gamecube one was offline and it still encouraged you to go to other people’s towns. Online just makes sense.
at RF Larke:
I didn’t even notice that.. I recognize it from some early screens of the game. The market changed considerably it seems.
Nintendo is really pissing me off lately with these type of comments. they’re completely giving the finger to the hardcore gamer. not that a MMO Animal Crossing is for the hardcore, just in general. they’ve completely abandoned the techie gamer and the middle gamer who’s been around since the NES days and may now being into more advanced ideas. all they’re going for now is the easy buck with the simple kiddie games and gimmicky controls. yeah you have your Mario’s and RE:4 ports, but for the most part they’re not moving forward technically. everything is a lateral move game-wise. which is why i was so excited getting Wii on release day, and now i only play the 360 i bought two months ago. one engaging 20 hour game every 5 months isn’t enough Nintendo.
@White-Mog
I think that you are finger pointing here dude. “Nintendo” has no plans to make a MMO, but what about 3rd parties? Rememeber that Nintendo makes systems, and makes the games that “they” want for them. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t going to be any MMO games period on the machine, it’s upto 3rd parties to do what they want.
I mean think about your XBOX, do you think that Microsoft plans on making any MMO games for it’s machines? Doubtful. But I bet that other developers would.
