Marth returns for the Brawl
Marth may be one of the last unlockable characters in Brawl that we’ll blatantly “reveal.” Why reveal him at all? Well, the game’s intro movie already tells you he’s in the newest Super Smash Bros. game, the Castle Siege stage gives his inclusion away with flags from his games (and not Ike’s) atop the castle, and - just as Roy was put into Melee solely to promote the upcoming Fire Emblem: F?in no Tsurugi - Marth’s presence will only increase the anticipation for the Fire Emblem DS game due out this year in Japan. That, and he’s the first star of the series.
Anyway, he’s back, and you can read about how to unlock him, use the tip of his sword, and use his Dancing Blade, Counter, and Final Smash attacks after the break.
Marth can be unlocked via any one of three methods: You can 1. play 10 brawls, 2. finish Classic Mode on any difficulty level, or D. get Marth to join your party in The Subspace Emissary. You’ll have to fight and defeat him in the former two options.
Marth plays very much like he does in Melee, encouraging players to land hits using the tip of Marth’s Falchion sword where it is most effective: 12% damage as opposed to 8%. His Dancing Blade attack is back, initiated with a side special move. You then follow up with the special attack button and the control stick or D-pad held up or in neutral. The third and fourth hits can be up, neutral, or down. The Counter skill also returns as Marth’s down special.
Finally, Marth’s Final Smash is one for fans of the series. It’s a critical hit, which pulls up a Fire Emblem life guage (for effect) and deals a massive blow to your opponents. Nice touch, isn’t it?
