Square-Enix rumored to be behind initial Brawl delay

080202geno.jpgIf you’ve seen the complete character select screen (warning: don’t click if avoiding spoilers) for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you may notice that the “Random” square in the bottom right is a bit out of place. Perhaps you’ve also noticed it’s in the same column as the only third-party characters in the game, Snake and Sonic. If you’re really good, you’ll notice that most of the ten top-voted characters for inclusion in Brawl from Sakurai/Nintendo’s online poll a few years back are in the game, save for the #1 choice…

Rumors are going around that Geno was initially a playable character on the Brawl roster. For the three of you who don’t know who Geno is, Geno was a character in Nintendo and Square’s Super Mario RPG. Square-Enix owns the character, and unfortunately a copyright dispute forced the original game delay in order to remove Geno from the game.

We’ll probably never know if this rumor is true or not. Will you miss Geno? Thanks to Robert and Val for the tip.

Now that you mention it, that random box is mighty suspicious-looking. But damn, that’s a kick in the face, gut and ass if Geno truly held Smash up. I don’t know what would make me angrier: knowing that I could have played as Geno or the fact that I apparently can’t. Bleh.

Actually, follow-up thought. If Geno was such a difficult commodity to put in Brawl, then why did Square permit his use in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga? And why would Nintendo have wasted that allowance with such a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo?

actually, the guy who started this rumor made it up. he was disappointed with the roster and made up this rumor, he even made up a fake moveset.

now that everyone’s reporting on this in their blog, the guy is starting to believe it himself. anyway heres the link to his blog:

lurk around there and youll find the post where he said geno was in brawl, then the post where he says he made it up.

I must be one of the three who doesn’t know this character. I’ve seen people complain that he’s not in Brawl before though, and it makes me wonder: Of all the possible characters that might have been included in Brawl, especially considering this is the first Smash Bros to include third party characters, what’s so essential about a character who from what I understand, has only appeared in one game?

There are plenty of characters I feel would have been perfect for this game that didn’t make it. Paper Mario, a Mii, Mega Man, Phoenix Wright, Tingle, Dr. Kawashima’s creepy polygonny head, just to name a few. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
