Surfer Girl talks Smash Bros. DS, next Retro title

080201smashds.jpgSo there’s this blogger named Surfer Girl that we’ve not really reported on before because, well, her rumors and predictions are usually seemingly out of left field. This case is no different. However, it’s turned out that Surfer Girl’s rumors are often completely true or were true in the recent past. That said, The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros. fans might want to perk up their ears (or not) for these…

The first new rumor is that Retro Studios is moving on from the Metroid franchise. With what? Well, they’re supposedly working on a new Zelda spin-off. No details yet, but we’re supposed to see it at E3 2008. If true, here’s hoping Retro can do some magic with it. Remember how Tetra’s Trackers went? Or how about Freshly-Picked Tingle’s Rosy Rupeeland?

The other rumor is that a Super Smash Bros. game did, in a sense, exist at one point. A prototype was made years ago, but the response was unfortunately lukewarm and the project was shelved. Sorry to burst the bubble!

I’m skeptical of how a Smash Bros. game could draw a tepid response. Unless they did a crap job with it, of course. I can think of no reason why Smash couldn’t be successful on the DS.
