OK, let’s see if I missed anything so far: BBFC refused to rate Manhunt 2, effectively banning it from release. Rockstar appealed the decision to not rate the game, but the revised version (released in the US as rated “M”) was still rejected by the BBFC. Rockstar appealed this rejection to the Video Appeals Committee, who decided to side with Rockstar and demanded the BBFC rate the game. The BBFC took the VAC’s judgement to UK high court and was granted judicial review.
The courts have ruled in favor of the BBFC, citing that the VAC’s ruling was through a “clear error of law.” Under the ruling, the VAC is now being asked to reconsider their 4-3 decision in favor of Rockstar, and we’ll go from there.
I’m actually getting tired of posting about all this, but it’s quite a circus isn’t it? Not to mention a significant fight for how open future games can be in terms of violence.
