Nintendo DS Lite… Lite mock-up

Ladies and gentlemen, we have seen the future! Armed with a 3D modeling program and a love for great design, Phil Nolen has created a mock-up for the next version of the Nintendo DS.

I like what I see, but maybe that’s just because I’m really loving my iPhone right now. With an emphasis on a slimmer shape and a larger top screen, this design mock-up doesn’t stray too far from the current design of the DS Lite, which is never a bad thing.

With the Wii and DS Lite, Nintendo took some design cues from Apple’s current MacBook and iPod generations with the white, clean, and shiny fingerprint trap style of 2006. Since then, Apple has moved onto their black/aluminum style with the current generation of the iMac, iPhone, and more than likely, the new MacBook (just speculation!), so I won’t be surprised when Nintendo follows the trend with the DS Lite Lite/DS Ultra Lite/DS2.

If you look closely, there are actually speakers, but I agree about the faulty hinge. Boo-hiss.

While this was no doubt made by someone who knows a lot about design, it was not someone who knows a lot about electronics. There are no speakers, and while the different screen sizes are arguably practical, the fact that the D-Pad and face buttons will scratch at the upper screen is definately questionable, not to mention that the hinge looks like it will snap at any moment.
