Toshio Iwai created the DS title, Electroplankton, several years ago. You can’t find it new in the United States anymore, but those who have used it know all the wonderful things you can do with it and a bit of recording software.
Iwai works for the Music and Human Interface Group, sponsored by Yamaha. There, they’ve recently created this device, a Tenori-On, which launched in London this past September. The Tenori-On uses Electroplankton‘s concept of combining light and sound in a complementary experience. It’s a $1200 instrument, sure, but that’s much cheaper than my ol’ clarinet, for example.
Some modern composers will jump at this new device, so it’s a shame that Electroplankton isn’t available anymore. You could do a lot of similar things with the DS (though on a smaller scale) game, and for a lot cheaper. Electroplankton was $35 when I bought it. I wonder what it goes for on eBay now…
