Microsoft coming to Nintendo’s partners for help
As you may recall, Gyration is responsible for the initial motion control concept behind Nintendo’s Wii Remote. Nintendo commissioned the company in 2001 to create a prototype motion sensitive game controller, and a two-handed breakaway design came from it. While Nintendo eventually shifted towards the one-handed Wii remote we know and love today, there’s no doubt that they had a significant role in shaping what the Wii has become.
Sony followed suit with motion controls, and now Microsoft, who launched early and without motion control, may be trying to level the playing ground. Reports say the Microsoft has gone to Gyration to create a motion controller for them, and that Xbox 360 owners could be playing motion-controlled games within a year.
What does that mean for us? Well, if it catches on with 360 owners, maybe more multiplatform games. But it also means that Nintendo will have fully revolutionized all console gaming with motion sensing games for the masses, and that we’ll likely be in for a better treat next time around.
