Online voice chat a possibility for Wii

toooth.jpgAfter spending the past month attached to Xbox Live, it’s distressing to see just how primitive Nintendo’s online service is. Thankfully, Nintendo seems aware of this and is trying to remedy some of its shortcomings. In today’s conference call, Reggie Fils-Aime hinted at the possibility of voice chat in future online Wii titles.

Our system has the capability for online voice chat, what it comes down to is finalizing the peripheral… I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system.

Since the Wii utilizes Bluetooth wireless technology, it shouldn’t be too hard to add a Bluetooth headset in the future. In fact, the PS3 already allows some Bluetooth headsets to connect with the system. Now, I’m usually clueless when it comes to wireless technology, but I believe that given the proper voice chat support in future games, a simple firmware update should allow most Bluetooth headsets to connect with the Wii.

We’re still sorting through our transcripts, so expect some more highlights from the conference call soon.
