The Wii Shop Channel was updated this week to allow users to purchase Virtual Console games and then send them as gifts to friends who also own a Wii and can download the software. Unfortunately, if any of your friends live across an ocean (or, reportedly, even the US-Canadian border), you’ll have to explain to them that you couldn’t get them anything for Christmas.
Apparently the feature is region-locked, is likely to prevent users from sending VC games as gifts to people in countries where the VC game hasn’t been released or will never be released.
Don’t attempt to send across the pond, either. It’s been reported that you’re not warned about the region-lock ahead of time, and trying to send the gift will simply give you an error message, before the game is lost in the virtual world forever, as are your Wii Points. I guess I’ll just have to keep waiting until Nintendo puts Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu on our Virtual Console. I won’t rest until they do.
