If you’ve got five or more people that want to play Brawl (or less and don’t have four controllers), you’ll likely organize a rotation set up among your friends. Winner out. Loser out. Whatever.
Of course, you’ll occasionally get that person who doesn’t like to play fair, and won’t listen to all of you if you say that person is out. Hopefully, they’ll listen to the game. Director Masahiro Sakurai has included a Rotation option in Brawl to make things easier. Just tell the game how many characters per match, how many human participants there are, who exactly swaps out after each game and how many will do so. It’s not all set in stone either – new players can join in any time, and current players can sit out to grab a snack or take care of some other business…
