Wii Shop Channel and Photo Channel Updates

Shop Channel 2

The long awaited gift feature for the Wii Shop Channel has finally arrived, and just in time for the holidays! Wii owners who perform a mandatory Wii system update will find that a “Gift” icon has been added next to the “Buy” icon for all software in the store. By clicking on this icon, you are able to purchase and send Virtual Console games as gifts to any Wii console owners who are in your friends list. After all, there’s no better way to show that you care than to send a loved one Super Mario Bros. 3 for the Virtual Console!

In addition to all this, the Photo Channel has been updated as well, and now allows users to play m4a music files when viewing a slide show. This should help resolve some of the music file compatibility issues that many Wii owners were experiencing. Be forewarned, however, that songs downloaded from the iTunes Music Store still will not work.

Now that the option to send Virtual Console titles as gifts is finally here, what do you think about all of this readers? Is this a feature you are likely to use? Let us know! (Also, thanks to Jared for the heads up on this story!)

Just a warning, the mp3 compatability is COMPLETELY removed from the photo channel and is replaced by m4a. I think that this is totally lame! But anways…

I will definitely use this gift giving feature to hook up my nephew with Super Metroid!!!

    m4a is a better format anyway… mp3 is getting kind’ve old.

It’d be nice if there was FLAC support…

There is a way to get mp3 support back, I just can’t remember where I saw it… My advice would just be to embrace the m4a format.
