Yoshiaki Koizumi, designer on Super Mario Galaxy, spoke out in an interview on how Mario’s latest adventure came together. You can check out an excerpt below.

And the suits that were in Galaxy, it seems like that those were a nod to the Super Mario Bros. 3 suits that were in that game. Were there particular Super Mario Bros. games that inspired Galaxy or were there any other outside influences that were injected into Galaxy?

This is sort of an interesting and weird answer, but it was only until after the game was released that I started to hear from everyone that it really seemed we had been influenced by Super Mario Bros. 3. I never really thought about that at the time, and certainly wasn’t so familiar with the music from Super Mario Bros. 3 and conscious about bringing that out in Galaxy as well. But this game is a very large team effort and there are a lot of people on staff who love those games and wanted to make sure we used music from Super Mario Bros. 3 and things like that. So it wasn’t until really after the fact that I began to realize some of the connections that came from this large team effort with many different inputs.

You can read more of the interview, which talks about the thought processes that went into making the game, and how they might consider going about the next Mario game.
