Mario's name isn't officially Mario Mario. That's only his name in the movie, which no one should hold up as representing anything official. And yes, Ashley and Wanda are real women's names, but I don't think it was a coincidence that they were picked over, oh, Hortense and Elizabeth.

Frankly, I just think you're reading too much into it. I mean, Wanda and Ashley are real names, not just objects with extra letters added on. The characters do have things in common with their names, yes, but that's more due to the Japanese love of punnery then anything else.

You mention Ranma 1/2, and you can see all the puns Takahashi threw in there. Everyone's name in there has a double meaning, in the case of some of the Chinese characters there is even a triple meaning (only Takahashi could create a trilingual pun).

The Marioverse's naming conventions have always been kind of weird. I mean the hero's name is Mario Mario, and his brother is Luigi Mario. Then there's Wario who is just Mario with the M flipped upside down (though his name I belive is also a pun in Japanese). Don't even get me started on "WaLuigi."
