Dragon Slaying- The movie!

Just a quick heads up to start- This is a documentary about me, so there is quite a bit of swearing in the video.

After three weeks of solid work, it’s finally done! Here are some quick facts about the film.

  • I recorded each and every attempt (you never know when the magic might happen). I had one camera on me while my computer recorded direct feed footage from the game.
  • In total, there are 11 tapes of footage. I had to record over some of the least eventful attempts (failure after failure at less than 50%), so there was well over 13 hours of attempted dragon slaying (now I feel bad for taking so long).
  • Everything that was said was entirely true. Yes, I thought about Taco Bell in my 98% attempt and I still have no idea how I happened to make it that far. And yes, I “ditched” my girlfriend to play the song one day. It really was the worst day ever and I still regret it. Guys with girlfriends, don’t ever do what I did.
  • I had to take a few days rest due to some wrist strain from the attempt.
  • After more than a week, I set a deadline for completion. I gave myself two days to finally do it (my life was nothing but Dragonforce by then), but if I didn’t do it by then, it would all be over. I did it that day.
  • I hated that beard. I’m not Amish, I swear.

Hope you enjoy it!

Matthew... I'm at school right now, and really bummed cause I hate Columbia so very much. Anyways, i just watched this and it made me feel slightly better. Your roommate is like the Billy Mitchell to your Steve Wiebe, except the fact that he does not hold some high score on Donkey Kong and such. But you get the message. I'm sure he is very nice and just jerking you around in the vid. Keep on rocking.
P.S. This song is only more epic until Cassandra Gemmini is put into a Guitar Hero game. Let's see how you can do for 32 mins of that shizzle.

What hardware/program did you use to capture the game onto your laptop? USB capture card?

My best advice is to just find a Gamestop with cool employees. The one closest to my house sucks (the only reason we got the Metroid one is because the manager that hates us wasn't working), so you might have to travel some ways.

Become friends with them, or if you aren't into that, just be nice to them. They usually get rid of stuff a week or 2 after games are released (some keep them for longer), but ask about them far in advance. If possible, ask to put your name and number on it for when they are ready to give them up.

However, these tips usually won't work. Most stores are too stingy to give them up. I got 2 of them out of dumb luck (the GHIII one was in a random walk-in. My name was already on the standup, but the guy didn't care- he just said "go away and take it"). As for the Galaxy one, I had to slip the manager $20 to take it home.

Ok, so I rambled a bit too much. The best advice is to just find a Gamestop with nice employees. It's hard to do, but it will happen if you try hard enough.

And to everybody else: Thank you for all the kind words about the video!
  • Very nice job with the whole thing. I have yet to actually sit down and crunch through Guitar Hero 3... of course, I don't own it so it is a tad harder to do so. You did a nice job overall though. Better than I could do. :D

One thing I am very curious of.. is.. where you got all the gaming standups and such. I've been trying to snag anything and everything I can and to no avail. Any tips?

    Good work dude.

P.S. I am a fan of beards. It's too bad I shaved mine (in the process of growing it back).

    Rock on.
  • stickboy79
Dude...you're more skilled than I am. And my girlfriend destroys me at this game...no joke.

    I need some pointers.

That was a very enjoyable video. Congrats!

I noticed the yellow t-shirt from somewhere in Wisconsin. You live around those parts?

I had a similar experience with Kingdom Hearts a couple of weeks ago. It's an action-RPG so there was a considerable amount of skill involved dodging attacks and timing your own attacks properly.

Anyways, it took me a long time to beat the game. At the end there's a massive boss sequence where I died about 20 times in total. I chose Magic as my specialty at the beginning of the game, and at the end of the game Magic is completely useless. It was considerably harder for me to beat the game than for a friend of mine who was also playing it at the time (he chose physical offense as his specialty).

Finally beating the game was probably about a quarter of the effort involved in Matt's adventure, but it had the same effect on me. Took over my life for a couple of days as I struggled to finish it.
  • Heheh oh man. Forgive me, but that's unhealthy, dude. =P

But man oh man do I understand how it is afterwards.Just yesterday I beat Ocarina of Time (No it did not take me 9 years. I just started playing 12 days ago. =P) and now I am bored as heck.

Wow, I'm only now finally getting the hang of Hard.

Maybe 5 years from now I'll attempt the same thing on Guitar Hero V. Actually probably not. After watching this documentary I don't think I ever want to put my brain through something like that. :P
  • TPMailman
    Good job.

congrats, now you can take down that wild hogs poster
  • matthew
No, I'm sorry for what I did. Now come over for some dinner!
  • 1) No malls in Chicago!
    2) Shopping alone is no fun!
    3) I don't need Matthew to give me things to do to make sure I'm occupied--I have plenty of video games of my OWN that I can play, and do! I'm fine with spending time alone and doing my own thing! BUT I had not seen Matthew all week and was leaving in a few days to go home for another week so I really wanted to see him. Things just didn't work out that day--I was sad at the time! But I got over it! I mostly just tease him about it now. Sorry if I made you feel bad, Matthew...
  • Billie
Dude you could have given your gf some cash to blow at the mall if you want some "time alone" with the game. Or another tatic that worked with me was to get the gf hooked on Tetris, so that shes too busy to notice. I'm stuck cause I live with the gf, so I gotta think of more tactics......shit gotta think of more, shes an active reader of this site.....
  • earliodookie
    dang man, good job.

i can't finish that song, metallica, and slayer. and i neglect finals and friends when i play haha, totally understand.
  • WolfeatingRaven
great job, i'm sure that took a crap load of will power not to just smash your game.

BTW i think the beard worked!
  • Joey
Awesome job, Matt. Hilarious and very entertaining.
  • Turbo
