Nintendo scores the first 0/10 in environmental performance

071201gore.jpgGreenpeace International has released their updated evaluations of several electronics companies, and Nintendo joins the list for the first time. The list looks at the environmental performance of each company, grading on how effectively they “clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances” and “takeback and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete.” How did rivals Sony and Microsoft score? Let’s take a look:

  • Sony: More products free of toxic PVC and improved reporting on recycling and takeback especially in the US. Score: 7.3
  • Microsoft: Long timeline for toxic chemicals elimination (2011) and poor takeback policy and practice. Score: 2.7

And Nintendo? Nintendo’s new this year, but that didn’t stop Greenpeace from handing out the first ever 0/10 score for a global company. Zeros across all criteria! Ouch!

Don't forget their plans of world domination. Greenpeace don't like that.

I'm pretty confused that Nintendo didn't at least get points for effort based purely on the fact that their console uses a fraction of the amount of energy needed to run than MSoft and Sony's.

Not only is Nintendo solely responsible for the hole in the ozone layer, but they also make the Wii using ground up baby seals and elephant tusks. That is why they got the zero score.

Well this certainly doesn't match up with one of our previous stories:

Yep it's true, Nintendo got docked scores because they didn't provide this information on their website. Nintendo should have gotten a N/A instead of a zero.

In Nintendo's defense, I would just like to point out that upon closer inspection you'll realise that Greenpeace gave zeroes in categories where information was unavailable. If Nintendo did not or could not provide information then they were given a zero which seems pretty stupid.
