Milestone: 20 million DS units sold across Japan

Within the system’s first 14 months, the Nintendo DS managed to sell 6 million units in Japan. With the advent of the DS Lite, both systems have managed to sell an additional 14 millions units over the next 21 months. It doesn’t take a Calculus major to figure out that that’s twenty million Nintendo DS handhelds now in circulation around Japan – astounding when you consider the entire Japanese population is not even over 130 million people.

Media Crate has confirmed the milestone, putting Nintendo well on its way to their goal of 23 million (and surpassing the PlayStation 2) by the end of March 2008. Since the launch of the Nintendo DS, both iterations have accounted for half of the entire Japanese gaming hardware market, and 40% of the software market.

Awesome! I still remember when the haters were saying that the NDS was the next Virtual Boy.
