Activision pulling Guitar Hero III for Wii from retailers?

071119norock.jpgGuitar Hero III: Legends of Rock‘s arrival on the Wii was met with commercial success. Shortly after, however, there were several reports of problems ranging from games locking up, controllers not functioning, and the fact that the game’s audio runs in mono only. Following the reports on the latter, Activision said that they would look into the issue.

Now, unofficial reports are coming in that the publisher has decided to begin pulling the Wii version of Guitar Hero III from retailers, and that the game will be available again soon – in time for Christmas. If true, we have to give props to Activision for quickly responding to the game’s problems. On the other hand, what will those of you who already own the game do?

I have been reading about this for a couple days, but can anybody actually verify that this is in mono? I played this game with my nephew and we only had one channel plugged into the TV, and when we played multiplayer we could only hear one guitar until we plugged in both channels. Doesn’t this mean that it is in stereo? Or am I missing something?

I am not surprised. At all.

I was holding off on reporting the huge list of issues for when my review goes up (a bit delayed, I’m trying to finish Dragonforce. On expert. Almost done).

There IS a fix for the mono, but it involved several steps that would most likely be performed by a handful of users.

I was lucky to have a relatively decent version of the game, but my whammy bar stops working in mid-son at times. All I need to do is just unplug and replug the Wii Remote into the slot, but the issue is a HUGE problem when it occurs during boss battles or those hard songs where you need to use the whammy bar to get more star power.

Once again, I’ll go into more detail about these problems in my review, but these issues are completely unacceptable.

matthew, what exactly is the fix that you mentioned? My family just set up a new surround sound system in our basement and I was excited to try it out with Guitar Hero, so I would really like to know what to do.

Again, how can you tell that it’s mono?

Well, I could tell because my Wii is hooked up to a 5.1 surround sound system, and the sound only came from the center speaker when my receiver was set on surround sound mode. I had to set my receiver to “Mono sound to all speakers” mode in order to get sound in the other speakers, although this means that the sound will be the same in all of them. It was especially noticeable that I could feel nothing from my subwoofer.

My friend was also excited to try out Guitar Hero on his surround system and was very disappointed with the results.

This may only be a problem if your Wii is set to surround sound mode. I think I read somewhere that if your Wii is set to stereo, you can still get stereo sound. I could be wrong though, as I didn’t try changing the setting on my Wii.
