Nintendo updating Photo Channel to 1.1 in December

071118orch.jpgCurrent Wii owners will be able download the updated 1.1 version of the Photo Channel. The smallest change involves customizing your Wii Menu a little bit – you’ll be able to make one of your own personal photos serve as the icon for the Wii Photo Channel!

The bigger change involves support for audio files. MP3 file support will be dropped in the channel (but not in games that support them, such as Excite Truck) in favor of AAC files. AAC files provide better quality sound than an MP3 of the same size, and include the .m4a format that most of you rip your CDs into iTunes with. Songs that have been downloaded through the iTunes store will need to be burned and re-ripped to remove the user protection.

I’m a strong supporter of AAC filetypes, and even moreso of the lossless ones. It’s good to see Nintendo embracing the higher quality audio formats. Thanks to Jared for the tip.

I think that this is bull, they should have included AAC alongside mp3 instead of replacing it. Majority of my music is in mp3 or FLAC. I guess I’m going to have to waste time converting music….
