Happy 9th Birthday to the Game Boy Color

Has it been that long? Nine years ago today, North Americans got their hands on Nintendo’s “transitional” handheld. Nintendo’s newest handheld in 1998 wasn’t a mere cosmetic redesign like the “Play It Loud!” series or the Game Boy Pocket in 1995 and 1996, respectively. It wasn’t a huge overhaul, however, in the sense that the Game Boy Advance would be arriving in a short three years. Instead, the Game Boy Color brought a palette of over 32,000 colors to the previously monochrome Game Boy platform, and gave developers tools such as a faster processor and more memory.

Some of the best Game Boy Color games remembered today include the second generation Pokémon games and the “Oracle” games from The Legend of Zelda series. The handheld saw many games during its three-year tenure. How do you remember the Game Boy Color?

Yeah my best memory was playing the Super Mario Bros DX, and saying daaamn, I finally have a full fledged NES game in the palm of my hand.

Oddly enough, my fondest memory of the game boy color is from a wake...

A close relative died, so I had the duty of staying at the wake from start to finish. To occupy my time, I ran to kmart and picked up Super Mario Bros DX, or whatever clever title they gave the color version of the game.

    It was awesome.
