Despite launching on a Thursday, Super Mario Galaxy launched into the stratosphere by moving over a quarter-million units in the first sales week. It’s a humble number, considering that at least 700,000 Japanese gamers pre-ordered Mario’s latest platformer and that it failed to surpass Mario Party 8‘s first week sales (also starting on a Thursday). Nevertheless, 250,000 is a lot of units and gives the game a commanding lead for the week’s sales.
We’ll have to wait until next week to get an idea of how big the hype is in other parts of the world. Of course, with some Best Buys rumored to have broken the street date, it would of course be amusing to see US sales data from this week and spot Galaxy in the top 20 or so.
