NPD Group on fan response to the lack of monthly reports

071108npdgraph.jpgWhen word broke out that the NPD Group would no longer be divulging video game hardware and software sales figures to the media except for quarterly reports, the entire online community of video game fans took notice. The NPD Group’s PR rep, David Riley, explains his shock in hearing about the outcry.

“I had no idea this would be so ill-received. Honestly, I know this sounds ignorant but I really was taken aback when I started hearing/reading about this. It was unexpected.

“There was no push back [from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony]. However, it’s been a year, so we decided to pull this monthly feed and leave it up to the mftcr. as to whether or not they wanted that sales information released to media.”

Unfortunately, the NPD Group doesn’t seem like it will change its mind on ceasing the monthly, public reports. Not to worry, we’ll still hear NPD figures from Nintendo, but no longer with the unbiased report we’ve come to expect each month.

Well, Nintendo is usually ok when they give out hardware sales. Its Bony and M$ that like to exaggerate their numbers by giving consoles shipped instead of sold.
