DVD-enabled Wii delayed to 2008

071108hsmdvd.jpgWhen Nintendo announced a partnership with Sonic Solutions to bring DVD movie playback to the Wii, the intention was to do so by the end of this year (at least in Japan). Plans have changed, however.

With Nintendo still struggling to meet demand for the Wii console, the DVD-enabled Wii’s released will be postponed to at least 2008. While many of us would like to watch movies via our Wii systems, it makes sense. Why increase demand further when you can barely handle it right now?

Regardless, the sitch doesn’t really change for those of us outside of Japan. As of the announcement last year, Nintendo had no plans to bring the enhanced unit to other regions.

Christian, watch out!!! Your Wii will combust if it swallows HSM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who cares, I don’t understand why so many people want the Wii to play DVDs. If anything, it shortens the life of the console, by adding extra strain to the laser when it is used constantly.

  • Sushi

Doesn’t the Wii just need a firmware update to be able to play DVDs?

  • Sushi

Also, the average apartment/house in Japan is much smaller than in America and the people there are always trying to save more space. If the Wii were to play DVDs people could then get rid of their DVD player and save some space.

    Sushi:

I think I read somewhere that it takes more than a firmware update, I mean why else would they have to produce a whole new console.

Also, you have a valid point regarding Japan size, but aren’t most DVD players small to begin with, I mean mine at home is only a little bit bigger than the Wii. Also a bunch of Americans are crying about DVD playback, and even people here in San Francisco don’t have to worry about space THAT much. Also, don’t majority of people in Japan have a PS2? Or a computer if they really wanted to save space? Just a thought.

San Francisco is an open field compared to some parts of Japan.

I haven’t been to either (I hope to REALLY soon), but I’ve seen Lost in Translation and Full House. That automatically makes me an expert on both cities :D

You gotta ride the trollies there. Super fun. ESPECIALLY if you’re riding and pretty much hanging off the back, and you go up a steep hill. You feel like you’re going to fall onto the car behind you.

  • Billie

Dude the hills are so steep, it’s scary as hell when driving a stick shift!! I always feel like the car is going to roll back.

The funny thing is everytime I go into San Fran (I actually live 25 miles from San Francisco), I always try to look for a house that was like the house on Full House. Total garbage, Bob Sagat’s character would have to be a billionare to have a house as big as his in San Fran, considering renting a one bedroom room can cost 1,800.00 a month.
