Wii has lowest software to hardware ratio
While the majority of you that read this site are Nintendo fans that are likely to buy a Wii game (or more) every month or two, the fact the Wii Sports alone is enough to satisfy some casuals out there doesn’t bode well for the attach rate of any and all Wii software to hardware units out there. Take a look at how the ratios line up according to the NPD’s data through the end of September (USA data only).
- Xbox 360: software to hardware ratio: 6.59 (hardware total sold = 6.8 million; software total sold = 44.8 million)
- PlayStation 3: software to hardware ratio: 3.58 (hardware total sold = 1.9 million; software total sold = 6.8 million)
- Wii: software to hardware: 3.44 (hardware total sold = 4.5 million; software total sold = 15.5 million)
What’s important to consider is that while Wii Sports sales aren’t included in the software sales (as it’s bundled with the system), Wii Play is. The collection of mini-games’ main selling point is the bundled controller, and that surely inflates the Wii’s software sales. Take away Wii Play sales, and total Wii software sales hover around the 13.3 million mark. That’s a software to hardware ratio of about 2.95. Ouch.
I thought I had posted this, but I guess I hadn’t. Thanks to setrodox for the heads up.
