ABC and CBS Networks Cover Manhunt 2 Controversy
Last night both ABC and CBS ran news segments discussing the controversy surrounding the ultra-violent Manhunt 2 that was released in the United States on Monday for the Wii and PS2. Although this title is clearly not intended for younger audiences, these networks decided to rely on sensationalism rather than pure, factual knowledge as they questioned how children would respond to the violent scenes depicted in the game. As stated in the CBS segment:
The Wii has motion-sensing controls, and therefore to stab you’re gonna mimic a stabbing motion, to swing a sledgehammer or a shovel you would do the same. Unfortunately it’s probably not something you would want to have your kids get much practice on.
I realize that Manhunt 2 has been the subject of controversial discussion for some time now, but how do you feel about all of this, readers? Many people who have played Manhunt 2 agree that the violence in the game is quite disturbing at times, but does this justify the kind of response shown by the mainstream media?

The argument here is not whether the game is too violent, the argument is whether games are designed for children or adults? (or both). Clearly, it’s not just kiddies playing games anymore, everyone is.
The problem isn’t that horrible games are being marketed towards children, it’s that the laws surounding the sale of video games are not enforced strong enough. It’s the same thing as cigarettes though; cigarettes will find their way into the hands of children.
People just need to understand that games are not just for children anymore, and take the time and effort to make sure that the adult-oriented games don’t find their way into their hands.
I agree games just haven’t been for children for years. But as with all newscasting and journalism it usually is never completely about the facts.
Honestly I don’t see what the fuss is, I played this game on the Wii for 3 hours last night, and there are probably a dozen or more games more violent than this. This game was censored pretty hard in my opinion, you can’t even see the executions. It’s pretty embarrassing that the UK actually banned this game.
On a side note though, it would have been cool to have had “Sledgehammer” practice when I was a kid. It would have been a hell of a lot easier to help my dad break up the concrete in our front yard when we replaced some sidewalk with a little more practice. Hehe
