Here it is folks, the first 18 minutes of Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure in direct feed glory. This was my very first time starting up the game, so everything you see is what I experienced on my first play through. There is a small portion of the dialog towards the end that was lost through the feed, but I wouldn’t want to spoil all of the introduction for you!
As for my impressions: I have only played through four puzzles, but I have enjoyed every minute of it. The presentation is what really blew me away at first. The characters are charming, the Wii remote is used in so many unique ways, and no matter how many times I failed a puzzle, I actually looked forward to starting over just so I could experience the level again.
Remember the controversy earlier this year when the Muslim call to prayer, “Allahu akbar,” was used by island savages? Well, I played through the level that was in question, and let me just say that it was an extremely good thing that the phrase was taken out. The island savages are some of the most… savage beings that I have ever encountered in a videogame or film. They are adorable on their own, but I can’t even begin to imagine the public outcry if the phrase was still in the game.
So far, I am enjoying the breath of fresh air that Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure has given to a generation of gaming that prides itself on faceless sequels. The presentation is flawless and the puzzles are challenging, yet highly addicting. What more could I ask for?
Christian will also be making his way through the game this week, so you can expect a full review (with a ton of new videos) next week.
