Germany Bans Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles

WeskerDespite the fact that the Wii generally has a family-friendly image, Capcom’s upcoming rail shooter Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles is clearly not intended for kids. According to the German ratings board, the violence depicted in the game is so graphic that it is unsuitable for a general release in Germany. Recently, the board refused to submit a rating for the game, which essentially prevents German retailers from selling the title whatsoever.

This, of course, is all following the controversial decision to ban Rockstar’s ultra-violent Manhunt 2 from hitting store shelves within the United Kingdom, despite the fact that the edited version of the game was given a Mature (17+) rating by North America’s ESRB. The German board’s refusal to give a rating to The Umbrella Chronicles makes this the second time this year that a violent Wii title has been banned in some way within Europe.

How do you feel about this decision, readers? Does it anger you that European officials are cracking down on violent games, or should this censorship be taken a step even further?

Since when has the resident evil series been so mature that it needs to be banned away from the minds of a whole country. last time i checked umbrella chronicles isn’t doing anything groundbreaking in terms of adult content to deserve this. i can more or less understand the banning of manhunt 2 in the U.K. simply because of the situations it depicts and what that could do to citizens. i fully intend on purchasing manhunt 2 on the first day though, and believe that both these games should be offered everywhere just with a mature content level, that ought to be followed. it doesn’t say that you need to be 18 to purchase for your own health….or does it? anyway give the people the choice and if it offends or pollutes your mind easily, simply don’t buy it.

personaly i don’t really get into violent games much but it really isn’t the government’s place to decide what i can and cannot buy.

It makes sense, germany has always had very strict laws against violence in games, movies and tv.
The germans have a system called The Index which they use to list all games seen to be violent or racist etc. All games listed on The Index can not be sold by retailers in Germany.

In fact all previous resident evils are on The Index.

    Description of The Index:

I can’t remember which game, but I remember that the developers had to change the blood content from red to green to satisfy the German laws.. Kind of strange.

  • drktrpr1

Well clearly red means realistic blood and gore, and green means cartoon blood and gore!
