Smash Bros. delay will weaken Nintendo’s holiday lineup

071015mariogalaxy.jpgDuh? Michael Pachter of Wedbush Morgan makes his prediction for the upcoming holiday season. Without giving actual numbers, Pachter believes that Nintendo will still come out on top, but with the Smash Bros. blockbuster delayed until February, holiday competition will be much closer than expected.

“But instead of Nintendo being the clear winner this holiday, maybe Microsoft has a chance of keeping up. There’s not as much compelling Nintendo content this holiday without it,” said Pachter.

The analyst doesn’t think Smash Bros. sales will take a hit from the delay when it finally releases, but that Nintendo’s Christmas might be dampened. With the trump card out of the picture, Nintendo believes that Super Mario Galaxy will finally get the spotlight it deserves. Pachter, on the other hand believes that Activision’s Guitar Hero III will lead Wii sales this holiday.

“That’s the game that people who bought Wii for ‘Tennis‘ will want,” he said.

I never said that people don't like brawl, shoot, people LOVE SSB (Shoot I can't wait to play it). But these games will always take a backseat to the Mario successors in my gaming world. Even back in the Gamecube days, people were waiting on Super Mario Sunshine. That's why I asked when did SSB pull forward ahead of the stand alone Mario games. Just a few months ago?

The replay value is so high, that whenever I glance into the game lab at school, SSBM is the only game that is always being played...

Sure, you could argue that this is just because people are excited for Brawl, but it's been this way for 3 years.

BTW, I'm more excited about Galaxy also :P

I just have a serious queston. Since when were Super Smash Bros. games "better" or more anticipated than the next Mario game? Everybody I know is actually more stoked about playing Mario Galaxy than SSBB.

I do, but they don't like me..

at Matt, Very true, I'll be able to get some other games, like NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for instance.

Don't we all just love fiscal years?
  • As far as Nintendo cares, it's still part of the same fiscal year, which ends at the end of March. So we'll definitely be seeing the Smash Bros. Effect once Nintendo releases their financial results.

Yes, but the delay will also allow for people to discover some other games that they wouldn't have played if Brawl was released on time.

It will be a great holiday for gaming. And a great start to 2008 for Nintendo's wallet.
