Four new Super Mario Galaxy power-ups revealed
With Brawl out of the picture for 2007, all Nintendo fans’ eyes are on Super Mario Galaxy, which seems to blend the magic of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World with the modern luxuries that can come with large three-dimensional worlds and motion control. Part of the nostalgic factor lies in the return of power-ups in the game – some old, some new. The developers don’t feel that knowing them is a spoiler, and honestly, they’re really not going to spill the story to you. Read on with confidence!
We’ve seen the Bee Suit, allowing Mario to fly, and the Boo Suit, turning Mario into hovering ghost. Returning from previous games are the use of Fire Mario and Rainbow Mario. Fire Mario dons his now white clothes and red overalls as he shoots a fireball every time you flick the Wii remote forward. Rainbow Mario is yours to control once you pick up a brightly flashing star item, giving you temporary invincibility.
Also at your disposal are the Spring Suit and Ice Suit. The Spring Suit engulfs Mario in a giant spring, allowing Mario to bounce around the stage as high as the planets’ gravities will allow. The Ice Suit will freeze any water under Mario’s feet, allowing him to walk across lakes and ponds. Kotaku’s Michael McWhertor has coined the suit’s new nickname: The Jesus Suit.
You can check out a low res video of the new power-ups in action after the break. The video will show off some new locales in the game, so if you don’t want to see those, you don’t have to.
