Modern Nintendo: Girls dominate Nintendo systems

071010girlpower.jpgAt Nintendo’s press conference in Japan early this morning (Western time), the usual numbers speech was given to kick things off. Among the numbers thrown out there were the male to female userbase numbers for the Wii and Nintendo DS. According to Nintendo’s data, 53% of all Japanese DS users are female, while 51% of Japanese Wii users are female. If you’re too lazy to do the math, that means the majority of DS and Wii users in Japan aren’t guys.

It’s doubtful that the same numbers hold true worldwide, or at least in North America, but that doesn’t mean the gaming population around here isn’t beginning to move away from the stereotypical demographic and into the mass market – because it is.

I’ve been tracking Everybody Votes statistics, and according to the data they provide in the US 30% of the Miis used for Everybody Votes are female. This is higher than it used to be. For the first couple months it was a steady 25%. The number also tends to be higher for international polls. Go to deadhobosociety.com for more info on that.
