Virtual Console Releases for 9/24/07- Yay or Nay?
This week’s Yay or Nay? takes a look at quite a diverse selection of titles. You’ve got Kirby’s Avalance (SNES), Streets of Rage 2 (Genesis), and Legend of Hero Tonma (TG16) on the platter for today. Which ones are worth your Wii Points? Click on to find out!
Kirby’s Avalanche
There are probably a billion other games exactly like this one, but Kirby’s Avalanche just happens to star everyone’s favorite pink puffball. Kirby’s Avalanche is essentially the Nintendo version of the Puyo Puyo game, licensed to the company after the same company let
Sega make a version in Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine. It’s a classic puzzle game that can get addictive once you know what’s going on, and it’s really easy to find yourself sitting at the game for hours.
The game is also great for multiplayer modes, where you and a friend can compete to see who’s better at this classic puzzle game. Kirby’s Avalanche is a great game, but as I explained, it’s essentially Puyo Puyo. If you already have any of the other Puyo Puyo games, you won’t need this one. If you don’t have any of them, and you don’t mind an $8 version of the game, it’s pretty much up to you if you want the Nintendo version (with Kirby), or the Sega version (with Dr. Robotnik), which are both out.
Final Opinion: Yay
Streets of Rage 3
Depending on who you talk to, Streets of Rage 3 is a little better or not quite up to the bar that Streets of Rage 2 established. Either way, that’s a pretty good indicator that Streets of Rage 3 is a solid beat-em-up game for the Virtual Console, despite the service being flooded with them by this point. The game feels and plays very much like its direct predecessor, adding in a few new features for good measure.
Improved over the second game are the inclusion of multiple game endings, unlockable characters, new attack moves, and even new ways to use weapons. The game will definitely present you with a good challenge, so be prepared to spend some time with the game.
In other respects, the game may seem to take a step back, but it’s nothing significant to worry about. The game’s visuals and audio seem to resemble the original game more than the second, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some of the returning characters sport similar movesets to their previous outings, and their animations might not be as flashy as they were in the second game. Again, though, it’s not enough to make the game a horrible experience.
Streets of Rage 3 is a solid game, and definitely one to get if you’re a fan of the series or these “beat ‘em up” games in general.
Final Opinion: Yay
Legend of Hero Tonma
This arcade-to-TG16 port has everything that can be expected from what was originally meant to be played during your time at the arcade. The game is not overly difficult and can be beaten in a relatively short amount of time,
but there are some key differences between this game and most others you’ve probably played
The main character, Tommy, can’t take any direct hits. You’ll start the game with only the ability to jump (which doesn’t defeat enemies, but can stun them) and shoot. If you take any damage, you lose a life. Not to worry though, as the game is littered with power-ups that provide you a shield for protection and several various projectiles to help you on your way. Basically, the tried-and-true method of jumping on enemies and shooting them with fireballs will help you get through the game.
It’s not a bad game, but it may not be worth $6, especially if you’re the kind who will end up completing the entire game in about an hour or two. Might as well add that $6 to your Zelda fund for next week.
Final Opinion: Nay
That wraps up our Yay or Nay? feature for this week. Hopefully you can get a good idea of whether or not some of these titles fit your style and are worth your time and money. Join us next week when we cover… well, whatever hits next week. See ya!
