The release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption marked the end of a “hardcore game” drought. Of course, many traditional games are notorious for needing complex control schemes, high-end graphics, and more. Retro Studios wasn’t going to dumb the game down, and was going to show that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption could be done on the Wii, and that it would be awesome.
In regards to the game’s graphical achievements, Corruption‘s art director, Todd Keller, had a few words and no complaints. “The Wii is a fairly decently powerful game system as far as polygons go. We don’t have a lot of depth with shader stuff, but we can make really good color palettes.” Keller confirmed that the Wii is definitely capable of graphics better that those found in Prime 3, stating that “you can definitely do more stuff that will be way beyond that.”
Nintendo is proud of what Retro Studios has proven they can do. As Pacini explains, “One of the things we’ve always been told by Nintendo of Japan is they say they appreciate us as a studio because we make games they can’t make. Their specialty is in the casual market. Their specialty is in the platforming and more traditional games. I’m really excited about what we’re working on next. If people enjoy the kinds of games Retro makes, I don’t think they’re going to be disappointed about what we’re doing.”
And just what are they doing? MTV will be posting several interviews in the near future, in which Retro discusses the hint to a future Metroid game that the fans have found hidden away in Corruption. Nintendo may have denied it, but it looks like Retro’s going to keep the fire going.
