While sources such as VG Chartz reported the Wii surpassing worldwide sales of the Xbox 360, Financial Times has compiled official figures from Enterbrain, the NPD Group, and Gfk that confirm worldwide Wii sales of at least nine million. This is ahead of the Xbox 360′s 8.9 million and the PlayStation 3′s 3.7 million, effectively making the Wii the number one selling console this generation after having been available for less than half the time as their nearest competitor.
Reasons for the Wii’s quick ascension to the throne include the Wii’s controller, price, and games like Wii Sports. In addition, while the Xbox 360 has failed in Microsoft’s attempt to win Japan over, the Wii is consistently selling well in all regions. Nintendo now has the #1 selling home console since the days of the Super Nintendo.
