No MMOs on the Wii at this time

070908pso.jpgAt the Austin Game Developers Conference, Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka continued to slowly crush fan hopes of a future for MMOs on the Wii. Not only that, but cross-platform MMOs on the Wii would be even harder to implement due to the glaring differences between the Wii and every other online-enabled platform out there.

“As for Nintendo Wii, it will be pretty difficult if you were to cross-platform for a couple reasons. One is that Nintendo’s currently not allowing different cross-platform titles, and as you know, the resolution differences make it harder for us to make cross-platform games. Currently we’re not looking at Nintendo Wii as a platform.”

Tanaka is currently working on a new MMO for the Xbox 360. He did comment that a future MMO could technically be possible on the Wii, assuming the Wii gets a hard drive add-on in the future. Memory storage is crucial for the genre. Start sending your e-mails to Nintendo now.
