Hot off the heals of the revelation that the latest Wii firmware upgrade makes Freeloader discs useless and modded Wiis worth their weight in bricks, it has been discovered that homebrew fans might also be losing out.

The new firmware upgrade effectively “breaks” the SD Media Launcher disc. The disc has, until now, been used to allow homebrew programmers to play their games on the Wii. Nintendo doesn’t want legal homebrew played this way either, as it potentially opens the door to pirated games running on the Wii without significant console modification.

Hopefully further firmware upgrades will continue to battle piracy while providing similar rewards for users downloading the latest version. Thanks to Val for the heads up on this.
