IGN thinks Nintendo hasn’t hyped Metroid Prime 3 enough.

It’s a well known fact that a game’s overall sales are determined by how well it sells in the first few weeks after its release. If a title can not find a large group of buyers right from the start, whatever hype the game had fades away as new games arrive on store shelves. Often this happens when a game is mediocre, but sometimes truly fantastic titles suffer from this phenomenon. In the gaming industry, if you want sales, you have got to really push your product, no matter how good the game may be.

With Microsoft’s wildly popular Halo franchise coming to a close with Halo 3 this September, Halo advertisements are starting to emerge. For example, Burger King recently announced they would soon be offering a Halo inspired value meal nationwide, with food packaging, of course, branded with Halo 3 ads. All of this is happening with Halo 3 a month and a half away.

While all of this is going on, Nintendo seems to be sitting by on the sidelines as the release date for Metroid Prime 3 rapidly approaches. While Microsoft is pushing Halo 3 into the public’s faces, the hype for MP3: Corruption is almost non-existent. If someone hasn’t been following the game since E3 last year, it seems possible that they wouldn’t even know that the game existed, let alone that it is coming out in 3 weeks.

What do you guys think about this? Is Corruption going to suffer from Nintendo’s lack of hype? Personally, I want to know how Nintendo can expect to keep their commitment to the hardcore gaming audience if they aren’t even willing to get aggressive with their advertising. There is no doubt in my mind that Prime 3 is going to be an incredible game, and I would hate to see it struggle to find an audience amidst the Halo mania that is about to erupt.

Microsoft just announced that the number of Halo 3 pre-orders has hit over one million. I’m guessing that Metroid Prime 3′s numbers are not quite that impressive. Probably because no one knows about the game….

In all honesty, I think Nintendo is making the right move. With Metroid’s lack of multiplayer, online, etc, the people of Nintendo would only be completely stupid if they think this is going to be a “mega-seller.” I think Reggie said in a press conference not too long ago that Corruption was the “gamer’s game.” Metroid Prime 3 is on the minds of anyone who truly loves games and has a Wii under their belt.

The sales will more than likely be pretty low, but the positive reviews and feedback from popular sites and magazines will help give Metroid just the amount it really needs to succeed. But in a generation where online is the way-to-go, a lot of people are going to be disappointed in Metroid for just being a fantastic single player.

I, personally, have been looking forward to this game since the initial announcement, but at the same time, I don’t want to hear non-stop complaints from immature and ignorant gamers that think Metroid Prime 3 should be online and have multiplayer.

Retro has done a fantastic job with the series since taking it over, and the only thing I think they did a poor job of doing was the multiplayer in MP2: Echoes. No doubt in my mind that Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is going to be the best Wii release to date, but commercial success is a different story. Especially in this day-and-age.

Don’t get me wrong, being both a Metroid Prime and Halo fan I know that the two franchises are as different as night and day. Although I was disappointed that Prime 3 would not feature online multiplayer, I am really looking forward to Corruption’s main game.

I’m not saying that Nintendo needs to take the same route that Microsoft is taking and push Prime 3 in the exact same way, but they need to do something. When is the last time you saw an ad for Prime 3? Nintendo seems to be waiting for other titles to start pumping out the ads, while if Microsoft had its way there would be Halo 3 ads tattooed to the inside of your eyelids.

As the article seems to hint, Nintendo might be waiting for the last minute…And if we look at the nintendo Wii TV ads, they started running the ads about two weeks before the game that was advertised was released, so I think we might be seeing some Prime 3 ads crop up soon. Or at least, I hope so.

I would like Nintendo to at least start some type of ad campaigning for what will be a truly remarkable game. I’m at least trying to do my part. I work at a retailer in the midwest and I’m trying to convince people to buy this game. As for multi-player, I just don’t think Metroid is suited for that type of play. It is an action/adventure (and now quasi-shooter), but exploration/advancement is the heart of the game. As with Prime 2, the multi-player aspect felt kind of tacked on and didn’t have the Metroid feel. Don’t get me wrong, Prime Hunters worked pretty well, but I’d be extremely satisfied just how the game is.
