Quake Arena may or may not be coming to the DS. John Carmack, in his keynote speech at QuakeCon, mentioned that there might be a DS version being developed. He went on saying that if it is being developed, he would like to see a Doom-style control scheme (D-pad based) in favour of a Metroid Prime Hunters stylus approach. He didn’t mention why he prefered the Doom controls over the Metroid variety, which leaves me kind of confused, because I love the stylus approach.
In any case, Quake 3 Arena is a multiplayer shooter designed for the PC and was originally released December 2nd, 1999. It was the first game of the series to abandon the single-player portion and devote the entire game to the multiplayer experience. The game was released with four modes:
- Free for All (Deathmatch)
- Team Deathmatch
- Tournament (1 on 1)
- Capture the Flag
It’s important to note that this game was confirmed for release on the Xbox Live Arcade. Also, a remake is in the works to be run in a web browser. It has been renamed Quake Zero, and it will be available for free. (Supported by advertising).
