Guitar Hero 3: New songs, hammer-ons, and other tidbits
Every Guitar Hero addict knows of scorehero.com, the online database of top scores and just about everything Guitar Hero related. Well, those lucky chaps were flown out to L.A. by Neversoft to get some serious play time with the newest edition of my favorite procrastination tool. Aside from the new songs they were able to tell us about (more on those soon), they were also able to gather some other juicy bits of info.
First off, four new songs were revealed!
- “Suck My Kiss” - Red Hot Chili Peppers
- “La Grange” - ZZ Top
- “Number Of The Beast” - Iron Maiden
- “Through The Fire And Flames” - Dragon Force
Of those songs, only “La Grange” is not a master track.
One of the obvious changes was that the new note charts seem to more accurately resemble how the song would be played on an actual guitar. The hammer-on system has also been reworked (again) to feel more realistic. Instead of basing a hammer-on solely on timing, Neversoft has made sure that the notes play as they would on a real guitar. If the note would be strummed on an actual guitar, you strum. If it’s a hammer-on, you will be able to perform a hammer-on. This sounds like common sense, but some sequences in the previous games made very little sense. I assume that this is one of those changes that you would need to experience hands-on to fully realize how different it feels, but apparently the new system adds a healthy dose of realism to the game.
The rest of the impressions were tidbits that put this Guitar Hero fan at ease. The Les Paul plays amazingly well, the songs are a blast to play, and the new engine that Neversoft built from the ground up feels as good as Guitar Hero 2, and even better at times. Normally I would be very skeptical of someone else’s opinions, but these are coming from some of the greatest and most dedicated Guitar Hero players in the world, so something tells me that we might be alright.
