Perry: Wii won’t last, Wii-mote a step in right direction

Dave Perry has said in an interview that the Wii’s popularity will eventually bow down to the graphical power of rival consoles. He predicts that when beautiful-looking games like Halo 3 come out (is that really the best example?), gamers will drop everything, even their Wii remotes, to play it. This coming from the guy who created Earthworm Jim.

He does give the Wii its due praise, however, in its efforts to return to a simple, easy-to-use interface. It’s not the last effort we’ll see, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

“What we see at the moment is companies adding more and more complexity to a game’s input, which is the wrong direction games are going in.

“The model for the Wii interface is clearly working, Nintendo took buttons off their controller, and that didn’t make it impossible to make games for it. There’s like seventeen different buttons on a PlayStation 3 controller.

“I think we’ll always see more and more interesting approaches to interface, and I really don’t think the Wii is the ultimate solution to that.”

NIntendo would have created the perfect new system if they had only added a bit more emphasis in the graphical prowess, some of the games do look laughably ugly.

Had they done that, the machine would cost more and people would still complain.

Regardless, everyone still thinks it’s some sort of fad or whatever. Whether it’s denial or stupidity, the Wii is making its mark just like the DS did. I expect sales to really take off when more games come out, just like they did. . .with the DS.

Halo 3 is his best example of a beautiful game? Fail. Try something else like MGS4, Mass Effect, White Knight, anything but Halo 3.

And one other thing to add, he talks like Wii’s will just disappear when Halo 3 comes out. The Wii is THE secondary console for those hardcore gamers.

But think about that. Either someone has a PS3 and a Wii or a 360 and a Wii. Nintendo is rolling in the dough either way.
