Aonuma planning a brand new Zelda game for the Wii
Most talk up until now has discussed the possibility of a new Zelda game on the Wii. However, an interview by Chris Kohler of Wired News and Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, suggests that they are in fact moving forward with a true Zelda game designed for the Wii.
WN: With Phantom Hourglass done, what’s the future of the Zelda series? Do you want to do for the Wii the same thing you did for DS, radically re-envision the series, toss out the items that don’t work and start over, and make items redesigned for the Wiimote?
EA: In Japanese, there’s a saying, me kara uroko [fish scales fall from your eyes]. It means a paradigm shift, a new way of thinking. With this DS Zelda, I and the staff, our eyes were opened to the possibilities of the hardware, as game developers, to understand what our responsibility is. And what we were creating, what the potential was there. So not only are we planning to do the same thing for the Wii, but to continue to do so for the DS as well. I’m very surprised at what we were able to do.
The rest of the interview actually talks a lot more about Phantom Hourglass, how it came to be what it is, how it’s been different from previous Zelda development experiences, and what kind of reception it’s gotten. Head on over to read the full interview.
