WiiConnect24 overheating some Wii systems?

This problem doesn’t seem to be affecting everyone, as we’re getting reports of hot Wii units in standby and others that are barely warm at all. However, those that are affected have reported damaged pixels or lines on the screen due to an overheated GPU. The culprit? Leaving the system’s WiiConnect24 feature on all the time.

Have you been affected? Is your system off, or on standby? I know mine hasn’t had any visual problems yet, but my Wii gets very hot, even in a well ventilated area. It’s hotter than I’m sure it would be if I left the Wii outside on a hot summer day for a few hours, or locked in a car with the windows up. If it ends up affecting the video output, I’m hoping it does before my warranty runs out…

EDIT: I should mention that if your Wii has in fact fallen victim to overheating, you should call Nintendo’s Customer Support during normal work hours about replacing the system as part of your warranty. Nintendo can be reached at 1-800-255-3700.

I’ve definitely been the victim of WiiConnect24. When the picture is rich in color and animation, I get a lot of black-dotted lines up and down my screen. This is most notable on Mario64. But for the most part, it doesn’t show up. Kind of bothersome though :/

My Wii is generally pretty hot with Wiiconnect24 on all the time, so I’ve taken to turning it off and on when I need it.

Mine dfinetely gets warm. I used to line up my games right next to the system but notcied that it got super warm. I try to keep the Wii out in the open now. No visual problems.

Oh, so that’s why my Wii has been on fire for the past few days.

It does get quite hot but I’ve had mine constantly on Wii connect for well since launch now and have had no problems.

You really should send your Wii back to Nintendo for repair, if it is still under warranty. I had the exact same problem with mine, and believe me it will only get worse. After a while the entire screen can become overrun by those darn dotted lines.

The repair process is quick and easy, you will probably be Wii-less for about 2 weeks. Nintendo never did tell me what was wrong, but I no longer leave WiiConnect on anymore, just in case.
