E3 2007: Third parties want to adopt the Balance Board

When Nintendo unveiled the pressure sensitive Wii Balance Board to the world on Wednesday morning, it was the first that most developers in the industry had heard of it. It’s a business expo as well after all, where developers are supposed to show off products to entice individual developers to work for them, and for those individuals to see what the companies are offering as options. When Nintendo showed off the Wii Balance Board, developers starting conjuring up ideas in their minds on what could be done with the new input peripheral. They want to embrace it.

Shigeru Miyamoto fielded some questions yesterday concerning third party development of software using the Wii Balance Board.

Q: What other applications do you see for the Wii fit board?
A: I think there really are a variety of different possibilities that the balance board offers… the simplest would be a snowboarding game. I think you will probably see some products for that very soon.

Q: Will third parties use the Wii Balance Board?
A: Given that we announced the Wii Balance Board just yesterday, we’ve since had a number of inquiries from third parties. We’ve also had some interest from the physical fitness industries. Many individuals in the medical industry are interested in it for the purposes of treatment.

Q: Do you see lots of peripherals in the Wii’s future?
A: When we first designed the wii remote, one of the goals was to allow it to have these expansion capabilities…
