The Irish Film Censors Office has officially banned Rockstar’s Manhunt 2 from release across Ireland.

MANHUNT 2 VIDEO GAME PROHIBITED

A prohibition order has been made by IFCO in relation to the video game Manhunt 2. The Order was made on 18th June 2007 under Sec 7 (1) (b) of the Video Recordings Act 1989 which refers to ‘acts of gross violence or cruelty (including mutilation and torture)’.

IFCO recognizes that in certain films, DVDs and video games, strong graphic violence may be a justifiable element within the overall context of the work. However, in the case of Manhunt 2, IFCO believes that there is no such context, and the level of gross, unrelenting and gratuitous violence is unacceptable.

Rockstar and Take Two are still reviewing their options regarding the game. If they opt to sell the game as-is, it will be interesting to see how many imported copies make their way into the UK and Ireland.

To put it bluntly… there will be zero imported copies if things stay ‘as-is.’

Nintendo and Sony have both stated that they refuse to support a third-party game that receives an AO rating, meaning that it simply won’t exist on consoles.

Granted, I guess they could release and import a computer version, but that seems like a big-time hit on the Take-Two bank account.
