Virtual Console Releases for 6/18/07- Yay or Nay?

Oh Virtual Console, how you have given me such joy in the past two weeks with two of my most wanted games (Zelda and Sonic!), but why must you be so cruel when it’s my turn to write the Yay or Nay? This week is probably one of the most disappointing thus far, with amazing titles such as NES Open Tournament Golf, World Sports Competition, and Bloody Wolf. This week’s theme: “Wait, so are these people completely oblivious to what the Wii has to offer?”

The answer is yes. Read on to find out why!

Bloody Wolf

According to the Virtual Console description, this was an “insanely popular arcade game.” Funny, because I have never heard of this game until recently, but then again, I was too busy enjoying true arcade classics such as Operation Wolf, NARC, and my favorite, Smash TV (I still go around telling people, “Good luck…you’ll need it!”). Seriously, when am I going to get my Virtual Console fix of those games?

But I digress, let’s talk about Bloody Wolf! bloodwolf.jpgThe game is a run and gun game, because the Virtual Console doesn’t have any of those! Or beat ‘em ups. Note to Sega: why don’t you just release Streets of Rage 3 already? We swear that we will act surprised.

So what sets Bloody Wolf apart from the endless stream of mindless action games out there? How about the guns? Bloody Wolf offers a bloody good selection of weapons: machine guns, spread guns, bazookas, knifes, grenades, and I’m pretty sure a flame thrower can be thrown in there somewhere. Knife fighting sounds swell, but this game really has nothing special to offer. Besides, why would any decent person purchase this game instead of Contra III or Gunstar Heroes?

Final Opinion: Nay

NES Open Tournament Golf

atomiccrossingsmall.jpgNow here’s a genre that holds a nostalgia factor of absolute zero. Seriously, retro golf games just suck. They are so awful that for the first time ever, I would rather watch golf on television than be subjected to this garbage. If they want to throw a golf game at us, at least make it Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf, but only if they can tell us why it’s called “Fighting Golf.” It would be like naming Animal Crossing, “Atomic Warfare Animal Crossing”.

Honestly though, did these people ever hear of a little game known as Wii Sports? It has golf. Oh, it’s also free with every Wii.

Final Opinion: Nay

World Sports Competition

So which Olympic video game would you rather play, the one that immerses the player into the Olympic environment by mimicking the actual motions used for swimming, running, table tennis, archery and javelin throwing (remember your wrist strap!),world_sports_competition.jpg OR would you rather play the game where you sit on the couch and press random buttons as fast as you could so you can “run” or “swim” faster (the shooting games rely on a cursor to aim)?

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m referring to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games in the first example, which is going to be amazing. My advice: skip World Sports Competition, unless you’re the type that enjoys spending money on generic button mashers that lack any sort of character and charm (and the official Olympic Games license!).

Final Opinion: Nay

This week was pretty terrible. At least Resident Evil 4 (Wii) and Sim City (DS) are available this week! Now let’s hope for Super Metroid for next week (extremely unlikely, but worth a shot).
