Codename Revolution has a nice little write up on why they believe online gaming could be a factor in ending console game piracy. Basically, with online components of video games becoming an increasingly present aspect in today’s games, banning a console entirely from the online network just might provide an incentive to stop pirating. Microsoft has gone an banned 360 consoles that are detected to have been altered or modded, and a simple firmware update from time to time could continually protect PS3s and Wiis from similar modifications.
While Microsoft may have overlooked some case-by-case scenarios (what if a used modded console is purchased unknowingly at a used game store?), the fact is that it’s definitely discouraging pirated game use through detection of modded consoles. Coupled with the recent “mod-proof” changes in the Wii hardware from the manufacturer themselves, pirates could be forced to decide whether one copied game is worth losing all online play.
Head on over to read CR’s write-up.
