The Official Nintendo Magazine recently published the following snippet of information.
To which I say, very good. Now, ONM isn’t to be taken as a confirming source of information, as the publication is handled by a body outside of Nintendo. However, in case you haven’t figured it out, Nintendo almost has to include Wii remote/nunchuk support for Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
While I do believe that the dev. team will end up making the Classic Controller the “preferred” method of control and possibly the GameCube controller as an alternate (if included, it won’t be primary for sure), the game has to include support for the Wii remote/nunchuk simply because the Wii isn’t packaged with the Classic Controller. You don’t want to sell arguably your biggest weapon for the year to ignorant Wii owners who come home to realize they can’t yet play the game they just bought without spending another $20. You also don’t pack in a Classic Controller and up the price of arguably your biggest weapon for the year. And you definitely don’t bundle it and keep the price the same – that’s $20 less you’re making on each copy if you’re Nintendo.
You sell them the game and make it playable with what comes in the Wii box, meaning potentially every Wii owner can play it. Then, once they find out how good the Classic Controller is for the game by word of mouth or trying it out at a friend’s house, people will shell out the extra money for a Classic Controller. That’s how Nintendo makes more money.
Of course, assuming the control scheme works, I’d be perfectly fine with the game being remote/nunchuk -only.
