Friday Night Concerts: Mario & Zelda Big Band

Last week, you saw a solo performance of the Mario theme on the flute while beatboxing by a Mr. Greg Patillo. This week, we’ll go back to a large ensemble performance. You may have heard recordings of the Mario & Zelda Big Band in Japan. I’ve got the CD on my iPod, and they perform a bunch of Mario and Zelda works as early as the original Super Mario Bros. theme and as recent as “Dragon Roost Isle” from The Wind Waker. It’s pretty awesome, and I’m sure all you high school band nerds out there (don’t worry, I was one) are gonna run up to your band directors early next school year and try to convince them to play this in jazz band. Good luck transcribing it.

Anyway, the particular track played in this clip below is the jazz ensemble playing a medley of couple iconic Zelda themes. I mean, who doesn’t love the Hyrule Field theme from Ocarina of Time? Oh, yeah, and the overworld theme from the original game’s in there too.
