The future of video game consoles

TechOnline has a new article up that looks at all the changes in video game hardware we’ve seen from the Atari 2600 on up to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and finally the Wii. Patrick Mannion points out that while game consoles of the past simply had to “look cool,” consoles today are focusing on cost and heat efficiency – probably to cram as many features as you can that your competitors don’t have while still keeping it affordable.

So where does that take us in the next generation? Mannion predicts standard 802.11n Wi-Fi, faster and cheaper chips, motion sensing, vision feedback, force feedback, you know… most of the stuff we already have. Still a good read though, as you see from an engineering and economic point of view as to what goes into your next system. However, it’s going to take some creative minds and resourceful dealers to come up with the next big thing that sets the next big system apart. Where’re those 3D holograms?
