Wii is a cultural phenomenon in Canada

Published by Christian under Wii

070530canadacase.jpg

Oh, Canada.

Canada.com has posted an article on the Wii’s continuing success, and seems to be based off of the information from last week’s Media Summit. Excerpt and link below.

At the November 2006 launch of the Wii in Toronto, Bertram anticipated good things for the console and hoped for “a strong second place” showing. The actual success is beyond anyone’s expectations. In less than five months since introduction, the company has sold six million Wii systems globally and nearly 29 million Wii games. The console has taken a step toward becoming a cultural phenomenon.Â

Wii remotes - Gotta catch ‘em all!

Published by Christian under Wii

It seems that Nintendo has been actively moving around some of the legal information on their Wii remotes, and it’s happened more than once! You might feel like checking your Wii remote later on and seeing which version you have. Both the ones I have are spotless on the outside, as I picked them up at launch. Below, though, you can see Nintendo moving around some patent and FCC information off to the outer side of the Wii remote. There have been some additions to the remote inside the battery compartment.

It’s not like it really matters - you’re probably not looking at the sides of your remotes while playing. But it makes you wonder what the reason for all the changes are. Maybe all these different versions, along with all the many versions of the Wii remote strap, might be considered rarities someday. Which ones do you have?

Thanks to Homer Simpson for the tip!

Looks like Toad’s packin’ these days

Published by Christian under Arts & Crafts

I’m sure if you kingdom was constantly occupied by those Koopas, you’d start to get violent as well. What a shame, Toads were such nice…people?

Mii-codes not the case; expect codes for each game

Published by Christian under Wii

070530vader.jpg

Looks like we won’t be given Mii-specific Friend Codes after all. It seems that Mario Strikers Charged producer Justin Dowdeswell was mistranslated or misquoted amidst all the chaos surrounding Friend Codes. Mr. Dowdeswell has confirmed that the Mii-specific system that he talked about only applied to his game, and that he doesn’t know how the system will work in other online games.

I guess we’ll have to make with what we have, and what we have are individual Friend Codes for every single online game we get. Hey, it worked on the DS right? 5 million users? …when it could’ve been 40 million…

Wii propels Nintendo Australia to doubled sales

Published by Christian under Wii

070530wiiaussie.jpg

Sales were doubled and profits tripled for Nintendo Australia in its fiscal year, according to the Australian IT news. Excerpt and link below.

The console, which was launched in early December last year, also helped to triple Nintendo Australia’s 2007 net profit to $6.4 million despite being on the market for barely a quarter of the year. The company’s most recent financial year closed on March 31, but that was enough time for Nintendo to sell close to 80,000 Wii consoles. Almost half of those consoles were sold in the four days after the Wii was launched on December 7, 2006.

Konami unlikely to put Silent Hill on the Wii

Published by Christian under Wii

070530silenthill.jpg

…For now, at least. Konami’s Masashi Tsuboyama mentioned the Wii in an interview with Dengeki PlayStation recently, stating that the Silent Hill series probably wouldn’t fit in on the Wii.

“While Nintendo Wii sales are very high, and I applaude Nintendo for their sucess, I dont think Silent Hill is a game that would be sold on Nintendo Wii as much as a game like Zelda would worldwide. This by no means says we will not consider the idea but the general opinion is that Wii is for family games and im sure the fans don’t play Silent Hill with their grandma!

“…Nintendo Wii would be easier to make for but the control scheme would be hard to implement in a Silent Hill game.”

I’m sure once other, similar games from other publishers do well on the Wii, Konami will learn to adapt their own games. It’s only a matter of time.

Nintendo WFC tops 5 million users and 200 million sessions

Published by Christian under Nintendo DS

Is it the Pokémon effect? The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection has, for Nintendo DS games alone, finally crossed two milestone marks just recently. Over 5 million unique Nintendo DS owners have gone and played online using their Nintendo DS and/or DS Lites, and have done so enough times that there have been over 200 million connections to the online service.

“Nintendo DS gamers globally use Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection as an easy, fun place to find fellow players, all without paying anything extra for the service,” according to Reggie, Nintendo’s president. “The milestones represent millions of hours of fun and camaraderie despite miles between players.”

The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection currently supports over 65 various Nintendo DS titles, including Mario Kart DS and Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Full press release after the break.
