Wii Friend Codes to be Mii-specific?

Published by Christian at 4:10 pm

Adding to the Friend Code fire is a claim from producer Justin Dowsedell, of Next Level Games, that Friend Codes on the Wii will be Mii-specific. When you go online in Mario Strikers Charged, for example, we know you choose a Mii to represent yourself online. The Friend Code that is then generated is based on that Mii. What does that mean? It means that assuming you use the same Mii to represent yourself online in every other future Wii game that uses it, you’ll have the same Friend Code. It’s almost like your Mii has a screenname.

Dowsedell isn’t from Nintendo, but he’s close enough to the inside to have an idea of how the whole system will work. We’d rather hear from Nintendo, of course, but in the mass confusion as to whether or not Friend Codes will or won’t be game specific, this is good news.

Or it could be really bad news if each game has it’s own friend code for each Mii, meaning that potentially not only does each game have a unique friend code, but each Mii you use with that game has it’s own unique friend code, and if you use the same Mii with the next online game that game has it’s own set of friend codes for each Mii, meaning that there are the maximum possible number of friends codes for each system/game/mii combination.

I really hope it’s simply tied to the Mii, and that Mii has a friend code that spreads through every online game, but I don’t see how this will work considering 3rd party developers won’t be able to use Miis anyway… (did I hear that once?)

[...] to our friends at The Tanooki, Nintendo may plan on using individual Mii’s to generate friend codes for your online games. [...]
